Scope of Work

A detailed description of the work a contractor will perform.

Definition

Scope of work (SOW) is the section of a contract defining exactly what tasks, materials, and outcomes are included in the agreed price.

In plain English

A clear SOW prevents disputes by spelling out what is and isn't included. Anything not in the SOW requires a change order.

Example

A flooring SOW lists: removal of existing carpet, installation of 600 sq ft of LVP, transition strips, and haul-away — but NOT subfloor repair.
