What usually causes it

• Low battery

What you need

• 9V battery or AA batteries
• Stepladder
• Compressed air (optional)

How to fix it yourself

1. A single chirp every 30–60 seconds = low battery — replace the battery
2. Replace with a fresh 9V or AA battery (check your model) and press the test button
3. If chirping continues with new battery, the unit may be expired — check the manufacture date on the back
4. Smoke detectors expire after 10 years and must be replaced
5. For hardwired units: replace the battery AND reset by holding the test button for 15 seconds
6. Blow out dust with compressed air — debris can trigger false alarms
